ATLANTA (April 21, 2008) Athletes for a Better World (ABW) and the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) announced the scholarship recipients for the inaugural Vincent J. Dooley Awards and Scholarships presented by Champion Window and Patio Rooms at a luncheon prior to the Braves game on Sunday, April 20 .
University of Georgia Hall of Fame Coach Vince Dooley announced the two recipients. LaToya Tufts from Vidalia High School, and Robby Ostrowski from The Westminster School received the coveted scholarships. Over 250 Dooley Award recipients were recognized before the game as the athletes who were the most outstanding leaders on the field, in their school and in the community.
The two senior recipients honored were awarded a four-year, $1,000 per year scholarship and $1,000 to present to the charity of their choice.
“The Georgia High School Association is excited and proud to be involved in the recognition of such fine young men and young women,” said GHSA Assistant Director Gary Phillips. “The elements of teamwork, citizenship, and achievement are what high school sports should be about. We congratulate all of this year's award winners.”
The Dooley Awards are given to one male and one female senior in every Georgia high school who exemplifies distinguished individual character, outstanding teamwork and citizenship in their communities. In early December, athletic directors were asked to nominate a recipient from their school. The list was then cut to 10 boys and 10 girls by a selection committee, prior to the winners being announced on April 20.
“The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding individuals and call attention to the high esteem in which these values are held, so that they may become a stronger part of the ethos of participation in Georgia high school sports,” said ABW President Fred Northup.
The finalists included 10 boys and 10 girls from Georgia area schools.
