2008 Wooden Citizenship Cup Winners Announced

ATLANTA (January 25, 2008) – Will Bruce of Williams College and Andrea Jaeger, the former Number Two women’s professional tennis player, received the fourth annual Coach Wooden Citizenship Cups, given to athletes who are outstanding citizens as well as competitors. The Wooden Cup is given to a collegiate and a professional athlete who have made the greatest difference in the lives of others. Coach Vince Dooley,  former University of Georgia athletic director and Chairman of the Selection Committee, made the presentation to Bruce, a hockey player and tireless community volunteer. Tom Gorman, former tennis great and member of the ABW Advisory Board, made the presentation to Ms. Jaeger, who retired from  professional tennis at the age of 19 and has since devoted her life to enriching the lives of  kids with cancer.

The Wooden Cup is named in honor of John Wooden, one of the most successful coaches in collegiate basketball history. Wooden’s legacy as a compassionate, civic-minded individual has made him one of the most admired figures in sport. Deborah Norville, who anchors CBS’s "Inside Edition," served as MC of the award ceremony at Ansley Country Club.

The Wooden Cup is unique in that it is open to athletes in all collegiate and professional sports. Nominations come from every conference in the NCAA. Fred Northup, President, Athletes for a Better World, said “With Peyton Manning, John Smoltz, John Lynch and now Andrea Yaeger as professional recipients, the Wooden Cup is becoming one of the most prestigious awards in sport. Recipients are considered role models and athletes of excellence both on and off the field.”
